What is Pilates

Pilates is an exercise technique originally invented by the late Joseph Pilates earlier this century to help injured dancers recover their flexibility and alignment.

Nowadays you can take a group class on a mat or you can take private lessons on specially designed machines such the reformer and the cadillac.

Whether you take the mat class or use the machines, all Pilates moves are designed to work your core muscles– abs, low back, thighs and buttocks and to teach you proper alignment so you can move more freely and gracefully.

The main principles of pilates that I use in my classes and in one to one sesions are control, precision, coordination, balance, body alignment and posture, flow and of course fun!

Pilates incorporates so much of what today’s exercisers need. It increases strength, flexibility and endurance and improves posture, alignment, coordination and balance. All without building bulky muscles.

Nothing is forced or repetitive, you emphasis correct form rather than going for the burn. If you like to master things quickly this may not be the workout for you. Like dance, yoga and martial arts learning Pilates is a long term evolutionary process.
